Montgomery, AL--The Montgomery Youth Orchestra will present its annual Holiday Concert on Saturday, December 12, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. in the Troy University's Davis Theater for the Performing Arts. More than 80 students from Montgomery and surrounding counties will combine their talents to perform a medley of holiday music along with classical pieces, such as “Fugue in G Minor,” and holiday favorites, such as “A Christmas Festival.” Admission to the concert is free.
Maestra Yvonne Collins is now in her 20th anniversary season conducting the Montgomery Youth Orchestra. The group was founded in 1982 and is sponsored by the Montgomery Symphony League. The Montgomery Youth Orchestra serves over 80 young musicians from public and private schools throughout central Alabama. Thanks to her dedication, many MYO members have gone on to win statewide and regional orchestral competitions and to become members of Montgomery Symphony Orchestra.
A native of Chattanooga, TN, Maestra Collins has been involved with youth and community orchestras for over 40 years. Both a violinist and a pianist, she is also the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Second Violin. Collins is an active chamber musician and founding member of “Joyeux Musique,” a local string trio. She attended Tennessee Tech University, where she studied conducting with Robert Jaeger. Her professional Orchestral experience as a violinist includes the Chattanooga, Albany, Auburn, and Montgomery symphonies.
