MONTGOMERY -- Shaun Murphy, a renowned blues vocalist who has toured with Eric Clapton, Bob Seger, and Little Feat, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 28, 2011, at The Capri Theatre.
Murphy, a Nebraska native, began her recording career in 1971 with Motown Records.
She was singing in venues such as Detroit's historic Grande Ballroom when she was noticed by a Motown employee during a touring theater production with Meat Loaf. The two were signed by Rare Earth Records, a division of Motown Records, as Stoney and Meat Loaf. The pairing was short-lived and only Murphy was retained under contract after the breakup.
Murphy eventually left Motown and contacted Punch Andrews for opportunities back in her high school hometown of Detroit. In 1973, Murphy returned to Detroit to work with Bob Seger and The Borneo Band - on tour and in the studio. She moved to Los Angeles in 1985 to work with Eric Clapton on the Behind the Sun album.
Murphy's career in vocals has been both as lead singer and as a session musician. She has toured and recorded with acts such as The Moody Blues, Bob Seger, Phil Collins, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Maria Muldaur, Bruce Hornsby, Michael Bolton, J.J. Cale, Coco Montoya and Alice Cooper. She also engaged in live theatre as part of national road companies for two popular rock musicals, Hair and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road.
In September 1993, Murphy joined the band Little Feat, hired as the lead singer replacing Craig Fuller. Murphy left the band at the end of February 2009 after 16 years and over 1,400 live appearances.
She is now pursuing her solo blues and soul projects. In September 2009, she released the album Livin' The Blues. A second album, The Trouble With Lovin', followed in 2010.
She also continues to work with Bob Seger.
The show at the Capri Theatre is sponsored by The Alabama Roots Music Society, a non-profit organization committed to bringing roots music talent to central Alabama at affordable prices.
Tickets are available at The Capri Theatre and Capitol Book & News in Cloverdale. Admission is $10 in advance; $8 for ARMS members and Capri members; or $15 on the day of the show. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.
